Wheeler And Wilson Serial Number Chart

Wheeler & wilson sewing machines In 1876, the new W&W No. 8 machine was introduced and a new series of serial numbers was initiated. It is, therefore, imperative to know that the machine is one of the earlier style machines before using the following list of serial numbers to date the machines, approximately as follows. We have the same one in my house,the exact same.it is beautiful, i just looked at it now and it seems like it had a little more gold print on the machine itself,you can still see some remnants of it,and when you raise the machine out of the base and set it up,there is a gold seal looking thing which is gold color and it says d-9.the sad part is in the 80`s we had a dog that chewed the drawers.

Singer 9W with puzzling serial number

#889

Hi All,
Just bought a Singer 9W off ebay, Hopefully it arrives safely:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shuttle-And-Bobbin-For-Minnesota-A-Sewing-Machine-/291053253986?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43c4203562
I enjoy tinkering with numbers and noticed the unusual number on this one--3103059. The needlebar reports the highest D-9 at 3110189. Hmmm. I realize Singer was all over the place with their D-9 / 9W-1 / 9W-7 numbers but the 3103059 really puzzles me. Seems like it should be wearing W&W colors rather than Singer. Perhaps this is an 'overlap' Singer where W&W and Singer machines were being made at the same time. Any theories, speculation, or wild guesses appreciated.
Thanks

OOps, here's the correct link,

The incorrect link with the Minnesotta A shuttle will not work on a Davis Minnesota 'A', just thought I'd mention that

Jon;
I think that your overlap theory is about as good a guess as we are apt to come up with. Will be interesting to get more info on this machine after it arrives, hopefully in good sound shape. From the pics in the E-Bay listing it appears that it has the bagel bobbin. This would seem to indicate a 9W1. My Singer 9W has SN 3,185,801 & uses the flat sided bobbin so I take it to be a 9W7. It also will be interesting to know if your machine fits a Singer Cabinet or if it requires the W&W one, mine fits the Singer. By wearing Singer decals I suspect your's will also.
It was also noted the SN is on a raised panel behind the pillar, as is mine. All W&W 9's I have ever had knowledge of had the SN on the right hand plate as well as being stamped into the iron beneath the plate, but never on a raised panel as this one is, which to me definitely indicates manufacture by Singer & not just a finishing up of a machine in process at time of purchase.

Thanks Miller,

I'll take some more pictures once the 9W arrives. Looks like I'll have to hunt up a few more bagel bobbins. I'm hoping the 9W footprint will drop into my Redeye Singer treadle base and line up with the belt. All should be known in a few days--can't wait.

Hi Miller and All,

Received my 'puzzling' Singer 9W today in good shape, the ebay seller did an excellent job of packing. I was slightly concerned the footprint would be that of a Singer made D-9 but relieved when it dropped in and everything lined up in my Singer 66 treadle. The machine uses donut bobbins. Since the serial number of the machine is 3103055 and the last know Singer made D-9 is 3110189, I assume this example was made early in the 8 year run under Singer control/ ownership from 1905-1913. Now to clean up and put to use. Happy days.

Jon;
Happy to hear the Singer arrived safely. I have simply not had opportunity to examine enough of these 9W's to make positive statements, but am coming to believe if it wears Singer decals it will fit a Singer cabinet, but if it still has W&W decals it takes the W&W cabinet. In the 1908 Singer/Bridgeport catalog 9W1 machines are pictured with W&W decals & 9W7 ones with Singer decals. At this point I am not absolutely certain if the decals or the bobbin differentiates between the 9W1 & the 9W7, but had been assuming the bagel bobbin was a 9W1 & the flat bobbin a 9W7.

Miller and All,
I did some cleaning and oiling on my new 9W and had almost forgotten how smooth and quiet these machine are. The previous owner tried to use a 12x1 needle which fell far short of the hook. Perhaps it would have worked if lowered some? I tried to raise up on the feed dogs a wee bit and the only way this seemed possible was by bending on a lever in the linkage betwwen the cam and the dogs. I did a little bending and left well enough alone.
I'm in agreement the 9W-1 / 9W-7 naming guidelines aren't very clear. The same would go for the differences and dividing line in the D-9 and 9W-1. Both are tough questions in need of tackling. Hopefully a new edition of the encyclopedia or similar work or authoritative article will clear things up in the near future. I'll call my machine a 'Singer 9W' or 'Gertrude' in the meantime.

Peter,

Welcome. Awesome collection of W&W's--sounds like a museum! I tend to favor the bonnet style cabinets also.

All,

I was looking through my almost forgotten Singer 9W manual and 'discovered' the proper way to adjust the feed dog height. Remove feed dog bed plate and turn middle screw clockwise to raise or Counterclockwise to lower. This adjustment was not mentioned in the D-9 manual.
